National Quilting Day 2020

Vinyl bag block upcycle

National Quilting Day is observed annually on the third Saturday in March.  It is a day that is celebrated around the world with special quilting shows, classes, open museums and much more.  This is a day to appreciate and to recognize quilt makers, along with all of their long labor, love and skill that goes into the making of each quilt. JQG is once again celebrating the National Quiting Day on 21 March 2020.

Jacaranda Quilters Guild decided to celebrate by upcycling of orphan blocks into something usefull and beautiful. An orphan block is a block made for a project that was not used at that time. This can be due to a colour that didn’t work out, the size that was incorrect or a myriad of other reasons. This block ends up in our sewing rooms where we secretly treasure them, but are reminded of why they were not chosen every time we open the bag or drawer. Using these blocks can give you a sense of accomplishment and clean up some space in your sewingroom. The other advantage is that those blocks were, more often than not, made from really good quality quilting cotton.

Your teachers for the day will be Danél Muller, Tracy Jackson and Erla Cilliers. They promise to make it a day to remember.

Topics that will be discussed are:

  • How to combine blocks in an unexpected way to create a quilt masterpiece
  • How else blocks can be incorporated into beautiful everyday objects.
  • How to incorporate a block into a versatile vinyl, dust free, water tight project bag with zip.

The National Quilters Day will be celebrated ONLINE this year as a result of the threat of infection by the Corona Virus.

Even though it is a free day, please register online to give us an idea for how many people to prepare and where to send the list of requirements.

Please register for the JQG National Stitching day on 21 March 2020. It promises to be a day of inspiring ideas and lots of fun. Entry is FREE for JQG Members and R170 for non members. The day will be celebrated at Trinity Church, Roderikcs Street, Lynnwood.

Please bring along one item to use in our charity drive for upliftment of females in the city. A bar of soap, shampoo or deoderant, sanitary pads or tissues can make a big difference!
