10 – Assemble the bag

Vinyl bag block upcycle

Before we attach the side panel to the side of the bag, we need to mark.

Working on the bag piece where you attached the quilt. Measure 1/2″ from the top on both sides. This is where the top of your side panel will be attached. This will leave a lip on the top of your front panel where the zip will later be inserted.

Still on the bag side, measure 1/4″ from the bottom and mark. This is where you are going to stop sewing.

Mark the bottom centre of the square vinyl piece and the centre of the long side panel piece.

Paste a line of double sided tape, matching the two marks, remove the backing paper and press down to tack the seam.

Sew the seam from the centre to the corner. Stop 1/4″ from the corner and reverse sew to re-enforce. The seam is on the outside of the bag. Complete the other half of the bottom seam in the same way.

Paste a line of double sided tape along the sides and tack to the top on both sides stop 1/2″ from the top.

Tack the webbing with double sided tape on both sides and sew.

One side of the bag should now be attached to the side panel with webbing trim.

At this stage it becomes interesting to manouver the bag.

Mark and attach the other side in the same manner.

Both sides of the bag should now be attached to the side panel with webbing trim.

There should be a 1/2″ lip at the top of the front and back panels.
